About the Capitol
The United States Capitol Building is where Congress and the legislature of the Federal government meets. The Northern wing of the Capitol holds the chambers of the Senate, while the Southern wing holds the chambers of the House of Representatives. Though it is not the center of Washington, D.C., the center of the building is the point around which the street and address numbers radiate. The hallways of the first floor of the Capitol are covered with murals depicting some of the major events in American history, and the inside of the dome holds the painting called The Apotheosis of Washington.
Visiting the Capitol
The Capitol Building has a visitor center for the public to visit, as well as a portion of the building.
