About the Washington Monument

The Washington Monument was built from 1848 to 1884 to honor the nation's first president. The monument stands 555 feet, 5 1/2 inches tall, making it the tallest structure in Washington, D.C., and the tallest in the world until the Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889. The Washington Monument is still the tallest stone structure in the world. There were many halts in construction due to lack of funds, disputes within the society that was building the monument, and the Civil War. When the monument first opened to the public, there was a twenty minute elevator ride or 897 steps to climb to get to the top.
